Rated the best golf course in Taiwan four times, Sunrise Golf and Country Club is home to Taiwan’s most famous golfer and one time LPGA world number one, Yani Tseng. This course that carries the pedigree of the Trent Jones name is situated around one of the highest hills in the area and the natural elevation is brought into play with elevated tees and greens along with sweeping panoramic views. Big elevation changes expose the layout to coastal winds and calls for succinct aerial strategies and creative club selection into tighter fairways.

Taipei Golf Club 台北高爾夫俱樂部 (Taiwan) Taipei Golf Club  台北高爾夫俱樂部  (Taiwan)

Golfers lack for nothing at Taipei Golf Club, Taiwan’s largest, most fully equipped golf course. Facilities include two complete 18-hole courses, another par 3 short course, a driving range, practice-putting greens and bunkers, and a short-game area. It’s no wonder that the club most recently hosted the TLPGA Ladies Professional Open Kenda Cup in 2013. The A and B nines in the north feature winding yet relatively short fairways, and were designed by famed Taiwanese golfer Chen Huo-Shun. The C and D nines in the south, are the work of Japanese designer Kiyoshi Tomita, and feature straighter but longer fairways.

Taiwan Golf Club 台灣高爾夫球場 (Taiwan) Taiwan Golf Club  台灣高爾夫球場  (Taiwan)

Taiwan’s oldest and first golf club had very humble beginnings over a hundred years ago. It was a very rudimentary 3-hole affair before additional holes were tacked on, and a full 18-hole tract came to fruition in 1929 largely through the efforts of Japanese designer Akahoshi Shiro. Nicknamed ‘Cradle of the Golfers’, Taiwan Golf Club is also where many of the country’s top amateurs and professionals have honed their skills.

Known as one of the best courses in Taiwan, the Orient’s award winning clubhouse is a part of the golfing experience. Dug into the land, the second level of the complex is the same height as the back nine, resulting in the golfer teeing off from the grassed-over roof of the clubhouse. A friendly challenge with most of the holes affording a direct view to the green, the course has wide undulating tree-lined fairways with water coming into play.

Yung Han Golf Club 永漢高爾夫球場 (Taiwan) Yung Han Golf Club  永漢高爾夫球場  (Taiwan)

Don’t be confused if you hear Yung Han Golf Club and Saint Andrews of the East mentioned in the same breath, any similarities are deliberate. Having played the most celebrated golf courses during his extensive travels, and finding the courses back home lacking the culture and heritage of this great game he loved so much, the globetrotting founder of Yung Han was impressed enough by the Old Course at St. Andrews that he wanted the same Scottish links experience replicated along the Taiwanese coast.
